Christmas is a time of giving

Christmas is a time of giving and… Skål International Kuala Lumpur gives to the Lighthouse Children welfare Home, Kuala Lumpur.

Following the Skål International Kuala Lumpur Christmas party and its successful toy and gift collection for underprivileged children, President Mahendran Daniel, Immediate Past President Bill Haswell, and new member Rowena Hawkins visited the LIGHTHOUSE Children Welfare Home.

They delivered several boxes filled with Christmas toys, treats, clothing, and apparel for the children. Their visit coincided with a festive activity in which the children were engaged in decorating gingerbread, an initiative organized by the Home’s guardians and proprietors, Mr. and Mrs. Steven.

The Home accommodates 43 children, ages ranging from 6 months to 20 years. The children were so engrossed in their Christmas creative activity of gingerbread icing decorating that they did not seem too excited by the appearance of boxes of brand-new toys, Christmas biscuits, cakes and chocolates, nor the prospect of receiving new clothes, evidencing that they are already so well looked after and provided for by their Guardians! Skål International Kuala Lumpur is dedicated to charitable work and supporting those in need. President Mahen also handed over a donation cheque to supplement the Home’s operating costs, which amount to about RM35,000 (approx. Euros 5,287) per month. The Home also endeavours to be a self-sustaining organisation as far as possible and operates a few stalls in Shopping Malls, selling a range of homemade goods to the public.

Mr & Mrs Steven have operated the Home for the past 20 years, supported by donations from well-wishers and supporters, and by proceeds from stall sales. They have three premises in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, accommodating boys, girls, and infants separately. The Stevens appear to be very humble, friendly, and down-to-earth, with three children of their own, four grandchildren, and three adopted children. Both the six-month-old infants are ‘stateless’ and were given to them by the Malaysian Court on behalf of the National Welfare Department, while an eight-month-old infant is a UNHCR refugee. Thirteen of the forty-three children in the Home are UNHCR children from Myanmar and Vietnam, and all appear to be well cared for, friendly, and stable - a clear indication that Mr. & Mrs. Steven do look after these children very well.

It was such a joy to see them all enjoying themselves, and the pictures from the Event accompanying this Article speak volumes for themselves.

Skål Kuala Lumpur thanks each and every one of its Members who generously contributed towards the Spirit of giving this Christmas!

President Mahendran Daniel, the Executive Committee, and all Members of Skål International Kuala Lumpur wish every member of our Skål International Fraternity a splendid 2026, all good things and the choicest blessings to follow.

Skål!
